Last year City hosted the London Student Sustainability Conference: the first of its kind in London. The conference was developed to create a space for University of London students to share their research or academic work which inspires positive global impact, and supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Jessica, Sustainability Engagement Coordinator and organiser of the Conference, said: “We saw 19 students from City and other University of London institutions share their work, and on the day we welcomed over 70 students, academics, professionals and members of the public to find out more about what our students are doing! It was a great success, but the day could not have been possible without the hard work of all our behind-the-scenes volunteers. City students took a variety of roles on the day from setting up, registering delegates, ushering guests between sessions, taking notes in the presentations and even running a student takeover on our social media channels. It was a full on day, and we were relieved to have the help of a number of reliable volunteers for our first ever conference.”
Emmanuel, SMCSE postgraduate student and in charge of the City, University of London Instagram account for the day, said: “The event was great and I was excited to be part of the history.”
In between tasks, volunteers took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the presentations, network with academics and professionals, and broaden their knowledge of some of the solutions to today’s most critical issues.
Paige, studying for an undergraduate degree in BSc Speech and Language Therapy and one of the note-takers for the sessions, told us: “I really enjoyed being a part of the day and found it to be very insightful. I enjoyed the variety of topics and how passionate the speakers were!”
