You will be trained to:
- use the range of total communication techniques and encourage group members to use total communication
- Writing key words down
- Drawing
- Gesturing
- Using ‘props’ e.g. maps, photos, meeting minutes/agendas etc.
- Ensure you have pen and paper to share.
- Enable a person to have equal access to take part in group discussion by being observant of those needing more communication support. • Try and support in a subtle way, watching them to gauge your input. • Be aware of the whole group conversation and feed into this, supporting others to feed in. Beware of side conversations.
- Getting to meet people with a broad range of experience and backgrounds
- Perfecting your supported communication skills
- Learning form people with aphasia & their expertise in all sorts of areas
- Have a laugh and enjoy your conversations
- If in person, enjoy a cup of coffee too!
- You will have the chance to learn about supporting communication
- You will gain group facilitation skills
- You will learn about the role of the Speech & Language Therapist in the third sector
- You will gain communication access skills and how to lay out information in an easy read fashion
- You will gain skills in organisation and planning
- You will gain confidence in your abilities
- Bright, enthusiastic volunteers, happy to gain experience
- Someone who can give up to 2-3 hours per week - we can be flexible on days, times and locations
- Someone who is happy to be trained (ususally fun with people with aphasia)
- Someone who is reliable and organised
