XLP stands for ‘The eXceL Project’. In 1996, in response to a stabbing in a school playground, the school’s headmaster invited Patrick Regan OBE, a local youth worker at the time, to come into the school, work with their students and teachers, and help with difficult behavioural issues. After 22 years running XLP, Patrick left to set up the charity, Kintsugi Hope and Brighter Days, which helps to improve mental wellbeing.
XLP now operates in nine inner-city boroughs around London, and the City of London, working with over 4,000 young people each year through education, mentoring, employability, community youth work, sports and the arts.
Our mission statement is: ‘To engage in long-term relationships that empower young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to complete their education, avoid anti-social behaviour, and ultimately become independent and confident contributors within their communities.’
Our Projects
Bus
Each week, we bring our mobile youth centres – fully equipped buses – to different communities across London. They always draw huge crowds of young people who come to have a good time and talk to a youth worker. If you're a fan of teenagers, there's a spot for you here.
Time Commitment
A minimum of two hours a month, but could be every week.
Music
If you have a passion for UK Drill, Grime, Hip-Hop, and R&B, this could be the perfect opportunity for you! Come join us in encouraging young people to express themselves through music. Our mobile recording studios and a static studio in Stratford provide the perfect space for young people to explore lyric-writing and creating their own tracks. No need to worry about operating any equipment - we just need you to motivate and inspire the next generation of music-makers!
Time Commitment
A minimum of two hours a month, but could be every week.
Sports
If you love sports and young people, then volunteering on our sports projects is for you! You’ll be adaptable and energetic, but a high level of sporting skill isn’t required! You’ll join a football or gym session, and you’ll have other volunteers and XLP sports staff encouraging you along the way.
Time Commitment
A minimum of two hours a month, but could be every week.
Mentoring
Mentoring is chance for you to spend one-on-one time with a young person. You’ll be a role-model and trusted advisor, supporting mentees in working towards achieving their goals. No specific skills are required for this role and full training is provided. If you’re passionate about making a lasting difference in a young persons life - then this is for you!
Time Commitment
An hour a week, over a year, to ensure a lasting difference is made in the young person’s life.
Tutoring
If you want to help young people in their education then tutoring is for you. You’ll help with online tutoring for young people who are preparing to take their Maths and English GCSEs. You'll need GCSEs in Maths, we'll provide the rest of the training.
Time Commitment
An hour a week for up to a year, for a minimum of two academic terms.
We are looking for people who are passionate about tranforming communities and supporting young people!
